Mompreneur guilt is real! No doubt you have experienced it at some point in your journey. Did you know that a research study indicates that in the U.S., four out of ten full-time working moms say they don’t get to spend enough time with their kids?
We understand how it is to manage a business and children, but we’re here to help! Here are some tips that can help you overcome mom-guilt.
Don’t Let Your ‘Why’ Become Your Excuse
You may have heard this before but I’ll say it again – Don’t let your ‘why’ become your excuse. Think about why you started your product business in the first place. Was it so that you could leave your 9 to 5 to be able to have the flexibility to be with your kids?
Well, for most mompreneurs, that is the case. So, if you are feeling guilty about taking time away from your kids to do the thing that will actually give you freedom to be with them, then maybe it’s time to remember your ‘why’ and pat yourself on the back for following through.
Be Present
The benefit of being a mompreneur is that you have the flexibility to be with your kids when they need you. However, this also means that you might be multitasking too often…and not really being present with either your business or your kids, leaving you feeling guilty for not focusing on either one.
In order to avoid this pitfall, make time for both by scheduling your time in blocks and being fully present on one thing. When you’re playing with your kids in the park, try to leave your business deals at home. When you’re working on your business, know that you’re doing the best for your family, and that your kids are going to appreciate your happiness and fulfillment.
Set up a Boundary
Stay away from people who cause you guilt. At least create a boundary or a safe space for yourself. There will be people saying you’re putting your work before your child and maybe sometimes you’re forced to do that too but that’s YOUR choice. Try to ignore the snide comments and know that everyone has a different opinion.
Take a Break
A great way to deal with your mom-guilt is to take a break from your busy schedule and take a day off to spend it with your kids. Being a mompreneur is not an easy job so you deserve a break. A simple day trip to a fun amusement park or to the beach will be the best way to relax and unwind with your family.
Admit that There Are Things You Could Miss Out On
Entrepreneurs have it tough! Running a business together with kids’ activities, family events, household chores, and the list goes on…isn’t easy! When you’re a mom running a business, you have to be prepared to miss on some of your kids’ events. You can take the time out to attend their recitals and plays but even then, there will be days when you could miss an event or arrive late.
If that happens, realize that you’re doing your best, and that you cannot be everywhere. Give yourself grace and explain to your kids what happened. You can make up for lost time by taking them on a special trip or doing anything with them that they love doing with you.
Your Dreams Matter
Even though you have kids, you still have your own identity, dreams and ambitions. YOU matter and your dreams matter! You are creating an income for your family so that they can enjoy a better life. You are fulfilling your ambitions and dreams. You are setting an example for your kids so that they too can believe in the power of their dreams. They want you to be happy and fulfilled, which will only make you a better mom.
We only get one life to live. Guilt and regret are wasted emotions that don’t serve anyone. Choose to live a life of purpose and know that you are here to fulfill your potential.
It’s time for you to relax and stop feeling guilty for having a successful business!
Live the life you’ve dreamed of by managing your mom-guilt!
